When I began this program, I felt competitive. I would think, “I want the best story, the best pictures, and overall I want to stand out as a top journalist here.” I kept my story idea private in fear someone would recognize the great idea and capture it before I could start. After a couple days, it hit me. I was looking at this situation completely wrong.
I’ve always been envious of writers that I admire like C.S. Lewis who had J.R.R. Tolkien as a true friend. Tolkien and Lewis drank beer together and discussed ideas that manifested into great works. My eyes were open. Surrounding me were good photographers, good writers, and most importantly good ideas. This group now generated not just feelings of competition, but feelings of camaraderie as well.
The competition aspect remains, but at this critical point in time (luckily only a few days after arriving) I wanted everyone to be the best. I wanted everyone to stand out as top journalists. I realized that all our effort shall come together. We will demonstrate that through this program, we were able to gain the stories and images that represent the rich life in Urbino.
I may not be a famous writer, but I am surrounded by a group of people that both encourage and critize my writing. For four weeks, I have a connection with professionals in training and I wish them all the absolute best. I hope we can find our place in the journalism world and continue to succeed by supporting each other.

Yes! I adore the image of Lewis and Tolkein hunkering down, drinking beer, and being inspired in their writing. It is a great discovery that competition and camaraderie can go hand-in-hand.
