Guitars and drinks

I had an amazing night. It started when I ran into my friend Paolo (an Italian student) while walking into town and he invited me to hang out and have dinner with some of his friends. Between our broken speech, I was able to accept.

I headed to his dorm after class around eleven thirty, and as I got closer to his room I could hear the smooth sounds of an acoustic guitar.

When I stepped out on the rooftop, I saw Paolo and six of his friends sitting in a circle singing what I made out to be the Italian version of “Babaran.” After shaking hands with everyone and introducing myself, one of the students who called himself “Ricardo” explained to me that he and Paolo were in a rock band. I believed it because they both had great voices and played a mean guitar.

For about two hours we sat and sung songs. Most of the time they sang American songs in Italian, but sometimes I would chime in and sing in English. They thought it was hilarious. I also met a girl (don’t remember her name) that spoke decent English, and we discussed the differences between the American and Italian political structures. It was cool to get some insight on how things operate over here.

After a few drinks and a slew of songs, they taught me a game that was similar to twister, but without a mat. The object of the game was to hold hands and if your foot gets touched, you have to try and touch someone else’s. It was wicked hard, but fun.

That pretty much summed up my night. I had a great time and made some great friends. I’m happy that the students are so friendly because it is really a great learning tool. I’m sure I will see them again in the near future, and can not wait.

Were they singing the old Beach Boy’s song “Barbara Ann”??? That would be an amazing connection over 50 years back to U.S. pop culture. And Twister isn’t far removed. Neat.
